The Cursillo Movement in Canada

In Canada, the CCM has spread all over the country, from Newfoundland to British Columbia. It has different structures based on geographic regions or ethnic groups. In addition to the two National Secretariats officially recognized by the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (the MCFC and the CCCC), there are many language groups: Spanish, Hungarian, Korean, Vietnamese, Chinese and Croatian. There is also a Cursillo Movement for Aboriginal First Nations.

MCFC (Mouvement des Cursillos francophones du Canada)

The first Cursillo in Canada was held in 1963 in Three-Rivers to French-speaking nursing students, but it has not led to the founding of the Cursillo Movement in Canada. Its foundatio dates back to the cursillo which took place in Sherbrooke in 1965. Participants at this weekend soon began to spread the movement in the dioceses of Quebec and Montreal, and thereafter throughout three provinces in Eastern Canada: Quebec, Ontario and New Brunswick.

The MCFC National Secretariat was established in 1980. Today 21 Diocesan Secretariats (15 in Quebec, 3 in Ontario and 3 in New Brunswick) fall under the MCFC. Divided into four administrative sections, these 21 Secretariats look after 300+ communities in 26 dioceses (17 dioceses in Quebec, 6 in Ontario and 3 in New Brunswick).

CCCC (Canadian Conference of Catholic Cursillos)

The first Cursillo given in English in Canada occurred in Toronto in 1963, led by a team from Chicago, USA. (See Revista Tripode, Venezuela # 4, p. 25).

In 1984, the "Canadian Conference of Catholic Cursillos" was established, becoming the National Secretariat for the English speaking movement in Canada. Since then, several other Canadian cultural groups were affiliated to the CCCC.

The CCCC is active in 8 of the 10 provinces of Canada and is divided into three administrative regions:

  • The Western Region coordinates 5 diocesan secretariats and the Native Cursillo Movement
    see : Vancouver
  • The Central Region coordinates 9 diocesan secretariats and the Canadian Hungarian Cursillo Movement
see : Hamilton, Toronto, Thunder Bay, Windsor-Essex
  • The Atlantic Region coordinates 10 diocesan secretariats
    see : Charlottetown
